— Dr. Ryan Stone, Gravity (2013)
is to take generic, pre-written scripts from Hollywood and fuck them up. Change all the genders and races of the characters and take the stereotypical settings and subvert them by placing them in completely different settings. Then I hand them over to a production company that makes them and distributes them with the same budget and promotion as the original piece of shit script would have gotten.
so there’s a post on tumblr about the Hobbit that says (i’m not reblogging it because i don’t want to argue i just want to blub my opinion)
Hollywood would never, ever, ever make a big budget movie celebrating a bunch of women who are depicted as varying degrees of short, fat, old, and plain and how important their journey and their relationships are and how they, as people, deserve everyone’s time and attention
hold on a second
please tell me that’s a joke (it’s not, i looked)
did you read the book
have you even heard of eowyn even??????
tolkein wrote the women in his books to be bold and courageous ankduabdkhad
also i looked later and this was said
The problem isn’t with the Hobbit book, it’s with the fact that Hollywood chose to make such a monotone narrative into as big a blockbuster as it did. And didn’t bother racebending any of the main characters.
DID YOU EVEN READ THE BOOK????????
and why would they racebend like holy shit i HATE PEOPLE?
Oh come on. Éowyn is a great character. So are Arwen and Galadriel. But that’s just about the extent of the women in LOTR. As for The Hobbit, are there any? There is like 1 woman for every 100 male characters. This isn’t an attack on your beloved Tolkien, it’s an observation of how often the narratives that are highly promoted exclude women. It’s just an observation. It’s not even about your precious Hobbit. It’s about Hollywood and the film industry. There are just so few stories about women and people of colour. The Hobbit was probably mentioned by that person because even in fucking fantasy worlds still everything is just full of white men. When you start to open your eyes you might start noticing these patterns too.
i am not a huge lotr fan also last night i was really mad.
also all the books were written from the perspective of a hobbit so randomly inserting women in the plot would be kind of dumb because it would be unnecessary for the movement of the plot and makes little sense to just throw women in the books/films just to make people happy. the women who WERE written in the books were wonderfully written and there is no skirting around that.
and why are people in such a big tizzy? it’s a good story. that’s it? i don’t understand why if something doesn’t have a bunch of women and mixed races involved people can’t be happy with it?
“randomly inserting women in the plot would be kind of dumb because it would be unnecessary for the movement of the plot and makes little sense to just throw women in the books/films just to make people happy” LOL FOREVER. Women aren’t a fucking interest group. Is it really that fucking random for a male Hobbit to come across a female one? Isn’t that kind of normal? Would it have fucking killed Tolkien to make one of the four of the main cast in LOTR a woman? He at least has his “time” as an excuse. Are you one of those people that complained about “racism” when Idris Elba was cast in Thor? Whoever wrote that first post you were so mad about probably doesn’t even give a shit about The Hobbit and is just using it as one example of the same shit that goes on in every single movie.
God damn. Yes, women are just soooo random.
considering hobbits live in the shire and typically don’t leave and the books take place outside of the shire…. yes. yes it would be very random and very not normal.
did you read the hobbit because belladonna took, bilbo baggins mother, is mentioned like four lines into the book as being the reason bilbo is adventurous as he is. he got it from her.
no, it probably would not have killed him. there’s nothing wrong with the male characters though. nothing. at all. except that people like to get their panties in a twist about these types of things.
i actually had to look up who you mentioned so no, i wasn’t. :p
yes, we women are very random indeed. ;p
Ugh, this is such a boring argument. No, of course there’s nothing wrong with male characters. You obviously don’t get it. The problem is that there are more white male characters than any other character ever. Please watch TV for a couple hours and tally all the white males you see vs EVERYBODY ELSE. Watch LOTR or The Hobbit and tally it up. The discrepancy will be HUGE. Because even in the fantasy world white men are the only important people. “Mentioning” a woman doesn’t do shit. Does it pass the Bechdel Test? Oh look, no it doesn’t. Neither do all three LOTR films. Keep in mind this is a very basic test to evaluate only the presence of women in film.
And for real, you are just as much getting your “panties in a twist” as whoever that OP was and me.
